A lift station (also called a pump station) is an underground structure that collects wastewater from the surrounding sewer collection system and pumps it uphill or over long distances to the treatment facility. The wet well — the underground chamber where wastewater accumulates before the pumps activate — is a confined space that accumulates grease, rags, grit, and sediment over time. Without regular cleaning, this accumulation fouls the float switches and sensors, clogs pump intakes, causes pump cavitation, and eventually leads to pump failures and sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs).

Lift station cleaning is a multi-step process that includes removing accumulated solids and grease from the wet well, cleaning the pump intakes and guide rails, flushing the influent piping, and inspecting all mechanical and electrical components for signs of wear.
